Special Education Needs

The term 'Special Educational Needs' (SEN) has a legal definition, referring to children who have learning difficulties or disabilities that make it harder for them to learn or access education than most children of the same age.

Many children will have SEN of some kind, at some time during their education. Our experienced staff team of teachers and teaching assistants provide support, sometimes with the help of outside specialists.

If your child has Special Educational Needs, they may need extra help in a range of areas, for example:

  • Schoolwork
  • Reading, writing, number work or understanding information
  • Expressing themselves or understanding what others are saying
  • Making friends or relating to adults
  • Behaving properly in school
  • Organising themselves
  • Some kind of sensory or physical needs which may affect them in school

If you have any concerns about your child please talk to your child's teacher, or contact us at the office. A copy of our Special Educational Needs policy can be requested at the school office. The only change to this policy in the last year has been due to changes to the Special Educational Needs (ESAP) Funding.

Disability and Access

Our school has particular problems regarding access, as it was built on a hill and even the playgrounds are not level.  However, we do support the LEA Inclusion Policy and follow the Lancashire Schools Admissions procedures to ensure equal opportunities. Disability covers a wide range of difficulties.

As with all pupils, our school aims to cope effectively with special requirements providing extra support,  appropriate to the condition.  We would seek extra available support from outside agencies and the financial support to provide extra staff or adaptations to the premises if appropriate.

As part of Lancashire's aim to make schools more inclusive, we have completed an Accessibility Plan for the School Premises in order to identify and prioritise the work necessary to enable children and adults with disabilities to gain easier access to our site.

At present, access to the junior building from Gisburn Road is particularly difficult due to several steps at   all entrances.  However, we have secured access to disabled parking off Leonard Street and wheelchair / disability friendly access at the gate off Dam Head Road.  We have also installed an outdoor lift from the disabled car parking down to the entrance to the Children's Centre / Community Suite.

If you have a disability which may make gaining access difficult then please ring to ask for assistance for your visit. [School - 01282 812287  Children's Centre - 01282 814305]
