Medicines in School

Where children are ill and taking prescribed medicines they should normally be looked after at home. School staff should not generally be asked to take responsibility for medicines. A request may be made to the Head Teacher, in person or in writing, to administer prescribed medicine, if it is to be taken four times a day. It is expected that doses of three times a day can be managed at home.

asthmaHowever in cases where on-going medication is necessary (e.g. asthma, diabetes) special arrangements should be made with the Head Teacher.

We will be as helpful as we can in such circumstances. As an alternative, parents may wish to visit the school at lunch time in order to administer medicine to their child. If so, we ask that you would first speak to a member of the Welfare Staff before approaching any of the children. Class teachers and support staff should not be asked to administer medication.
